Hands-down favorite recipe is the sweet potatoe casserole with pecan topping. We must, must, must have it for Thanksgiving to be Thanksgiving.
LOL..growing up, my (now late) father's favorite Thanksgiving food was the jellied cranberry that keeps the shape of the can. Which reminds me, I need a good cranberry sauce recipe...
Favorite Thanksgiving recipe = this Chocolate-Pumpkin Pie:
http://viveleveganrecipes.blogspot.com/2007/10/chocolate-pumpkin-pie.html
I made a Carob-Pumpkin version of it for Thanksgiving, last year:
http://veggiegirlvegan.blogspot.com/2007/11/veggiegirls-first-annual-vegan.html
As disgusting as it may sound, my favorite Thanksgiving dish is green bean casserole. Normally, I'm against canned soup, but this is comfort food.
As far as weird goes, ummm I'll go with Mary about the cranberry sauce that holds the shape of the can. It actually started my hatred for cranberries, although now I'm a little more tolerable (sometimes cran juice makes me sick).
What are yours, Megan?
My fav recipe is my moms stuffing its the best!
The craziest thing that has showed up on my family's table at Thanksgiving would have to be the "Tur-duck-en"...a chicken inside of a duck inside of a turkey...Back then I wasn't vegetarian, so I had a taste of each! It sure was a good conversation starter let me tell you! :0)
My favorite dish is definitely the turkey. I love turkey. And mashed potatoes. I'm a simple guy. Heh.
I once had duck enchiladas at a Thanksgiving dinner, that's probably the strangest thing for me.
A couple of years ago we had turducken, in addition to the turkey. This year my dad and I have been scheming and have ordered yak steaks that we're going to cook (my mom doesn't know).... Hey, we like to make unusual memories! :-)
We always had ham at thanksgiving growing up and I loved it... but even since my grandpa hasn't been around we changed to turkey... I'd much rather have ham!! Since I'm helping mom cook this year we are having both woohoo! So ham is my favorite thing, not so traditional but tasty! Second runner up is pumpkin pie for sure though!!
Woo hoo! I love Giveaways!
My Favorite recipe is a secret one! My mom's top secret Cheese Ball is to die for!
My favorite recipe is a Broccoli-Velveeta cheese-Ritz cracker casserole. Definitely not for those watching their weight. I only indulge in it once a year.
Hmmm... I think it's gotta be chocolate bourbon pecan pie from How it all Vegan!
My favorite thanksgiving dish is chocolate cream pie!!! Homemade graham cracker pie crust with cool, creamy chocolatey filling and fresh whipped cream with chocolate shavings! YUM
My favorite thing is stuffing and my sister's broccoli casserole. I love it!!!
I don't know how strange it is, but one year my brother roasted a whole hog on a cooker in his back yard for Thanksgiving. It may be strange to some but growing up in NC, it probably wasn't that strange! Butit was sssooooo good!!!
My husband makes the best "drunk punch." It has no alcohol, just pure sugar. :)
Oooh, another giveaway!
My favorite holiday dish is my mother-in-laws noodle pudding. It could send you into cardiac arrest but we only make it once a year.
My favorite thanksgiving day food is this sweet potato casserole my mom makes. It has apple pie filling in it and its ridiculously delicious!
My family keeps Thanksgiving SIMPLE. Baked/roasted acorn squash, sweet potatoes (mashed), and pearl onions are on my top favorite list.
A couple times I convinced my fam to take us out for some Indian food on Turkey Day, and forget about the work of cooking. Those were some of my most tasty Thanksgivings in my experience.
We've had sushi and different types of Asian food brought over for guests at some thanksgivings also...which I guess is less traditional!!
My favorite is sweet potato souffle. I make it every year which reminds me, I better dig out my recipe.
Fun giveaway!
I haven't had a strange dish at Thanksgiving yet but I have had terrible tasting. (all at my mother's house by the way)
Favorite recipe is this years fancy (pain in the rear) dessert.
It doesn't have a name but here is what it has:
Its a cake that I made for my husbands work....Pistachio Swiss Broyage soaked in Kirsh topped with White Chocolate Pistachio Mousse and Morello Cherries Topped with Chocolate Pistachio Mouse and then a Chocolate Ganache glaze with white chocolate disks and pistachio...and finally a pistachio crust. It was heavenly...worth the pain. Now if you want to make your life easy you can buy it for Wegmans. My husband saw it in the catalog and plopped it on my laugh and said "Make this." with his eyes glowing.
my favorite thanksgiving dish is pecan pie!!
thanks for the giveaway!
Cheesy Ritz Broccoli Casserole - so easy, but such a staple at our house for the holidays.
I love my mom's turkey, it's different from the American tradition since my mom puts a Chinese spin on it (stuffing it with scallions, ginger, etc...) All I go for is turkey and chunky cranberry sauce :]
I guess I see a lot of strange things on Thanksgiving since it's always mainly chinese food/sidedishes... other than the foods I make (I always make my sweet potatos w/ marshmallows!!)
i LOVE mixing pumpkin and swt potatoes instead of mashed potatoes for thanksgiving!
YUM =)
thank you for thanksgiving giveaway! you're so nice =]
I don't think I've ever been served anything weird on Thanskgiving--but favorite recipe has got to be pumpkin pie!
Happy Thanksgiving!
I know it might sound incredibly boring, but it has to be either Pumpkin Pie or the recipe which will be featured on my blog next week ;-P!
Cheers,
Rosa
Favorite recipe is obviously pumpkin pie! (I bet you knew my answer already) ^_^
so nice of you Meg to offer a surprise thanksgiving giveaway...^_^
hmm, favorite?? mom's pumpkin chiffon pie, mashed potatoes (no gravy though!!)...
wierd? i dunno, it's been pretty traditional!
plain and simple..yams!!
My favorite 'dish' is the day after Thanksgiving turkey, stuffing, cranberry sauce sandwiches!
The strangest thing at our Tday table are Fiddleheads. I'm from Northern Maine and we harvest these edible fronds of the ostrich fern from the riverbanks in the spring, freeze them and enjoy them all year. I LOVE them!
...nothing like mince (meat) pie... raisins and spices w/ a rich buttery crust?! -crazy good.
My favorite is my family's cranberry relish & cauliflower with cheese sauce. My dad always smoked a turkey which was great, but it was the week after when mom made the turkey gumbo that it got REALLY good!
Count me in! I love your contests!
Heather
Favorite Thanksgiving recipe is my moms sweet potato (yam) casserole. She skins, boils and purees sweet potatoes (yams) and whips them with a little butter, milk and brown sugar. Then she whips in the secret ingredient, a can of chopped pineapple. Then, she spreads them into a casserole dish, tops with a layer of large marshmallows and broils until the marshmallows are browned on top. Best. dish. ever.
well, isn't this exciting!! i wish i knew the recipe for this pie i had, but my mom ordered an apple pie after we saw it on the food network. it's from the blue owl bakery and it was huge!! it's called the levee high caramel pecan apple pie. it was the best dish i have EVER had at thanksgiving.
http://www.theblueowl.com/menu.html
it's about half way down the page on the right in the "pies" category. you can't miss it.
I have tons of dishes on my list- but a funny one that showed up was a pear-glazed nut-blue cheese salad that my mom and I made last year, except my mom bought the SPICY nut mix from TJ's, instead of SWEET GLAZE!! Needless to say, everyone got an extra kick in their sweet salad :D
My favorite recipe is the lumpia my mom makes. We could have it anytime of the year, but for some reason, it tastes extra special on Thanksgiving.
The strangest thing I've seen is a lemon jello/cool whip/walnut dessert with cheddar cheese in it. It was odd looking but very tasty!
Happy Thanksgiving!
My favorite is my mom's oven-smoked turkey - marinated in a liquid-smoke brine for 15 hours, then baked at 200 for 15 hours. It always comes out extremely tender, moist, and flavorful. We just had some yesterday, and I absolutely love it!
Close second is the mashed potatoes, with gravy made from giblets and turkey pan drippings.
Stuffing is my favorite part of the traditional meal. Never remember seeing anything weird on Thanksgiving.
My favorite is definitely turkey, mashed potatoes, and corn all mixed together! Thanks for the opportunity.
It's already been mentioned, but definitely sweet potato casserole.
My family always had those yams with marshmellows on top. They were always so unappetizing to me. Finally about 5 years ago I just started making the casserole myself and everyone else loves it too. I like it with a little rum added in.
HI there, well its not strange to Me, but some of us, (me and my daughters are vegetarians) so I always make some type of vegetarian foods. The Tofurkey did NOT go over well! hahah Now the favorite is a Quorn Roast... easy to make and tastes very much like I remember turkey tasting (its been 19 years since I have eaten meat.)
My favorite thanksgiving recipe is my dad's mashed potatoes and gravy. He makes them perfectly. My mom has tried to recreate his recipe numerous times but hers is never as good!
my favorite would have to be the cranberry slices, i LOVE those!
My favorite recipe would have to be my Moms traditional family pork stuffing. It was my Grandfathers...I have tried to make it and its just never the same! Youm everyone loves it....
Thanks for the holiday giveaway, Meg! My favorite Thanksgiving recipe is Eastham turnips, tossed with olive oil, rosemary, salt and pepper and then roasted in the oven.
For some reason this is the most popular recipe every year. My sister-in-law just emailed me to ask for the recipe.
My favorite recipe for Thanksgiving would be.... potatoes drizzled with gravy. Ah, I am a sucker for carbohydrates!
My mom's stuffing kicks ass- bread crumbs, bread, sausage bits, bitter, spices, etc. Every year my sister and I fight over who gets more of it at dinner. Seriously, we carefully monitor how much each other spoons into the plate and if we try to quickly spoon a little more, it evolves into a shouting match. My mom has had to HIDE it from us after she makes it, b/c we will scour the kitchen to eat morsels. Also, how many of your fans can say this... my friend called from AUSTRIA on Thanksgiving to ask for my mom's recipe b/c she loves it so much.
Jennifer
I mean butter, not bitter!
Jennifer
I love my mom's popovers. We only eat them on TG and they are to die for! Sadly, I'll be missing them this year as I'll be with my new husband's family!
My dad's potato rolls are the BEST EVER!!! I also love my salad with a maple mustard dressing. YUM!
Happy Thanksgiving! Congrats on all the awards! :)
My favorite Thanksgiving recipe is these pumpkin pie tarts.
Hahha nice comic... soooo true :)
Weirdest food? Well that gelatinous cranberry sauce from the can that won't come out is kinda a food... maybe, just maybe
I think my favorite thanksgiving recipe is pecan pie!!!! such an amazing treat!
My favorite thanksgiving recipe is traidtional stuffing. so squishy...so yummy.
The weirdest thing that prob came on our thanksgiving table is a whole pig with an apple in the mouth. kind of gross...
My favorite Thanksgiving recipe is my aunt's Sweet Potato Casserole. It's topped with lots of brown sugar, coconut, and pecans. It's delicious!
My mom and I make pecan sticky buns every Thanksgiving morning. The tradition is wonderful, and we watch the Macy's Day Parade while they bake!
Happy Thanksgiving!
one year my uncle brought out Natto (Fermented soy beans) to eat on his rice w/ his turkey...omg so gross...and natto stinks like you would not believe!
but my fav recipe is def my mom's applesauce cake...actually, the recipe is by her mom, but she makes it of course!
